Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender + inclusive classroom practice

How can I be more inclusive of LGBT+ issues in the classroom?

At times it can feel daunting to critically examine your teaching practice but take the time to ask yourself - am I doing my best to be inclusive of LGBT+ young people?

- Have I ever mentioned LGBT+ issues/people in my lessons?

- Do I foster a safe space for discussion around LGBT+ isssues?

- Do I actively challenge homophobia and misconceptions around LGBT+ issues?

Embedding LGBT+ friendly language and discussion into your teaching practice doesn't need to be difficult or forced - the little things make all the difference.

Classroom

Don't assume all young people have had the same experience and exposure to LGBT issues - educate and discuss if questions pop up.

Try posing a problem-solving question where a same-sex couple is present instead of immediately assuming a heterosexual couple should be the norm.

Respect students chosen names and pronouns - if you get it wrong, just apologise and work on it for next time.

Try to use more inclusive language when talking to the whole class - folks / first year rather than boys and girls / guys.
